In June, in-plants from around the country gathered in Oklahoma City for the IPMA conference. Now, thanks to a new video from IPG, you can experience the event—or relive it, if you were lucky enough to have attended. The action-packed conference featured sessions on digital printing, equipment demos, an in-plant tour, an awards ceremony and lots of networking. Our video captures all of the excitement and shows you why this is one of the biggest events of the year in the in-plant industry. Xerox has unveiled a digital printing paper that reportedly uses half as many trees as traditional paper, while lowering the cost to mail printed material. Xerox High Yield Business Paper is a mechanical fiber paper that reportedly overcomes operational problems, such as curling and dust. It uses 90 percent of the tree versus only 45 percent being used to create traditional digital printing paper, it requires less water and chemicals and it is produced in a plant using hydroelectricity to partially power the pulping process. The lighter weight of High Yield Business Paper makes it ideal for transactional printers and direct mail centers seeking to reduce

Western & Southern Financial Group’s 18-employee in-plant was awarded the 2007 Management Award from the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) for providing outstanding support to its parent company. Not only did employees successfully move and integrate equipment from a member company’s in-plant into their Cincinnati facility, they handled a major increase in jobs with a 98 percent on-time record, while saving hundreds of thousands of dollars. “In 2006, our print shop experienced a 56 percent increase in jobs completed and a 20 percent increase in total impressions over 2005,” notes Daniel B. Cowan, print shop manager. “This, together with the savings we’re able to
Promoting your services is one of the keys to any in-plant’s success. Recently two in-plants were honored for their self-promotion efforts. During the IPMA conference in June, University of Missouri-Columbia Printing Services and University of Oklahoma Printing Services shared the stage to receive the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association’s Promotional Excellence award. The University of Missouri used its invitation to participate in a procurement department vendor fair as a way to draw attention to its many services, from wide-format printing and mounting to variable data printing on its Xerox iGen3. Attendees were given brochures, magnets, pads, pens and other promotional items, and

EAST HAMPTON, NY—This past week the Board of Directors of DICE, The Digital Imaging Customer Exchange, sent a letter to Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen, as well as other top Adobe managers expressing its members’ concerns over the Adobe’s decision to include a “send to FedEx Kinko’s” command in Acrobat 8.1. DICE is perhaps the oldest digital printing users group in the industry, boasting 328 member companies, all who own high-end color digital presses from either Kodak, HP, or Xerox In the letter it was stated that “DICE members collectively own thousands of Adobe applications, Adobe font packages, and Adobe RIPs. They helped to make PostScript
Compared to last year, color printing at Colgate University’s in-plant has jumped 96 percent since the Hamilton, N.Y., shop installed a pair of Xerox 250s. But the best part, says Bob Keats, director of Document and Mail Services, is the quality of that color. “We really, really, really liked the quality of the printing,” he says. “It’s much better than what we had previously.” Another boon: the operators can replace many of the parts themselves. “You don’t have to wait for a service guy,” Keats says. This is a big deal because of the in-plant’s semi-remote location, in central New York state. The shop
THE DIGITAL printing industry has come a long way from the stand-alone copier-only functionality of a few years ago. Still, many users find themselves unable to take full advantage of the available technology. The key to implementing advanced document technologies is education at all levels of the organization. The in-plant manager plays an important role in educating others about improving document workflow efficiencies. This article will help in-plant managers make decisions regarding new digital copiers/multifunctional printers (MFPs), both for their own in-plants as well as for other locations within the organization. Key Vendor Questions Before inviting a vendor in to discuss new
