Xerox Corp. is seeking tax breaks from Monroe County in New York for a possible $35 million expansion to one of its Webster, NY, toner plants, a move that could add 25 jobs. In its COMIDA application, Xerox says it is looking at Building 216 at its Webster campus, as well as some locations overseas—as the site of a planned expansion to boost Xerox’s toner production capacity.

On June 26th, the European Digital Press Association released its list of the 23 best digital production tools. Selected by the EDP General Assembly, made up of a representative of each European publication, the 2013 EDP Awards winners received their accolades during the FESPA exhibition in London.
“A business card is very personal. It’s representative of the individual,” explains Michael Schaefer, Print Center director at Methodist Healthcare System. “So I tell the employees, ‘You may think it’s just a card, but that’s got their name on it.’”
Strengthening your in-plant by adding new services is an excellent strategy. But finding new customers for existing services may offer even greater possibilities. That’s what Print Services at Hemet Unified School District, in Hemet, Calif., found, after adding yearbook printing to its repertoire three years ago. Manager Karl Melzer then made yearbooks available to other schools in southern California, along with customized student planners, and today the in-plant prints yearbooks for 16 schools and planners for 35. The shop also prints items like class work, banners, envelopes and apparel for other schools.

While many printers are watching their volumes head south, things are a little different for Arkansas State University Printing Services. “Our volume just keeps growing, and the amount of work and the revenue we generate for the university keeps growing,” says David Maloch, assistant director of the nine-employee in-plant. “So they like us over here.”
For the first time in its 49-year history, the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP) ventured into Minnesota last month, bringing 80 higher-ed in-plant managers together for four days of networking and education.
“It started with a phone call from the central procurement officer,” recalls Tammy Golden, director of the State of Tennessee’s Printing and Media Services division. The man on the other end of the line had a proposition to make.

About 300 people will lose their jobs as Xerox eliminates two Oregon call centers. The Norwalk, CT-based document management company disclosed through a notice filed under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act that it is closing its customer care centers in Coos Bay and North Bend.
