New IPG Graph Expo Video
November 17, 2006

As the in-plants who were there can attest, Graph Expo 2006 was one busy show. To give you a taste of the excitement and bustle of the event, IPG has produced a second video of the show. Available for viewing now on IPG’s home page, the three-minute video features a look at some of the digital technologies unveiled at the show, along with interviews of several the in-plant managers in attendance. This new video, launched this week, joins our first Graph Expo video, which takes a close look at the chemistry-free CTP and direct imaging press technologies at the Presstek booth. Watch them

IPG Launches Graph Expo Video
November 3, 2006

In-plant Graphics has debuted a new video on its Web site, the first of several planned videos from the Graph Expo show in Chicago three weeks ago. This video visits the Presstek exhibit at the show and features an interview with Ed Marino, president and CEO. Marino highlights two of the hot technologies on display at Graph Expo: Direct imaging offset and chemistry-free computer-to-plate. He details the benefits of Presstek’s 52DI press and Anthem Pro plates, shown running on a Dimension Excel platesetter. Both drew quite a crowd, as you’ll see in the short video. Check it out on the IPG home page:

Graph Expo Showcases Digital Future
November 1, 2006

More coverage of Graph Expo product introductions . IT MAY be telling that the majority of presses in operation around the show floor of Graph Expo and Converting Expo 2006 last month were of the digital variety. Offset units were conspicuous in their absence. Digital presses have become part of the commercial printing mainstream, rather than being a specialty product segment or market niche. To emphasize this, Hewlett-Packard shared results from an InfoTrends study that surveyed a sampling of digital color printing buyers and producers. The research firm found that the percentage of color printing jobs with a run length

Offset: If It Ain’t Broke...

OFFSET PRESSES continue to pull their weight amidst the flashy digital printers that have been popping up in offices nationwide. These digital newcomers might be great for short-run work, but for big projects they still must step aside and let ye olde offset workhorses do their thing. Don’t think being called “old” is an insult, though. The longevity of these machines is impressive and can easily add up to decades. Jim VanderWal, production manager at CRC Product Services in Grand Rapids, Mich., says that his shop’s four-color Heidelberg SM102 was purchased in 1989 and the two-color Heidelberg SM72 dates back to 1975. Say Good-bye to Chemicals
September 1, 2006

THE PAST decade of computer-to-plate development has brought an incredible revolution in printing. By streamlining workflows and eliminating unneeded and costly steps, CTP has allowed printing departments to save time and increase productivity, while improving the quality of the final printed piece. Despite these advantages, though, conventional CTP still relies on the extraneous and unnecessary steps and costs of processing the plate after imaging. Eliminating chemistry has a number of benefits. First and foremost is cost savings. Research by J Zarwan Partners (www.johnzarwan.com) shows that chemistry can cost up to 30 percent of the cost of the plate—and hidden costs can bring

CTP Changes Life at Med Center
September 1, 2006

WHEN THE Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s in-plant moved into the computer-to-plate world in 2000 by installing an ITEK 2430 polyester platemaker, everything changed at the eight-employee shop. “Moving to CTP was a dramatic change for us and improved our productivity significantly,” says Dale Travitz, group leader. The platesetter produced plates for the shop’s four presses: a two-color Heidelberg, an A.B.Dick T51, a Multigraphics 1250 with a T-head, and a Davidson perfector. Those presses printed the majority of the Hershey Medical Center’s materials—everything from brochures and flyers to newsletters and forms. “But as demand for four-color printing continued to climb,

Chemistry-free CTP Saves Big Money
August 18, 2006

In the latest IPG video, Mike Renn, assistant vice president of core services at Mellon Financial, in Philadelphia, relates how his in-plant’s new Presstek Vector TX52 platesetter is saving the company money: “We don’t need chemistry with this, so we save $10,000 a year just in chemistry costs,” Renn says on the video. “Just add water and that’s all you have to do to it.” The video tour also covers the seven-employee in-plant’s Ryobi press, Xerox 6060, Xerox Nuvera 120 and other equipment. Tomorrow’s Digital Printers Debut at On Demand
July 1, 2006

IT MAY not be a new topic, but on-demand printing can still pack a room—or a trade show floor, as was the case at the recent AIIM On Demand Conference and Exposition. More than 20,000 visitors from 50 states and 62 countries traveled to Philadelphia in May for the annual event. Waiting to greet them were some 450 exhibitors, all displaying their latest wares. Despite the show’s successful two-year run in Philadelphia, though, the city will not be hosting next year’s event (and no, the annoying cab strike on the first day had nothing to do with it). Questex Media Group, the
