Océ is holding VIP events in several cities to familiarize printers with its new equipment and educate them on the advantages of “green” initiatives. After the event, attendees are invited to join Oce at a major league baseball game, while tickets last. An Océ VIP event was held last week in Alexandria, Va. Attendees watched the Florida Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 10-4. The events will feature a preview of new Océ production color products, as well as the Océ VarioPrint 6000 series, which is reportedly 45 percent more energy efficient than comparable devices. Each event features former in-plant manager (and frequent IPG writer)
1. Get an energy audit to calculate your energy consumption. Your local electric company may have programs and people in place to evaluate your plant. 2. Calculate your carbon footprint. There are numerous calculators freely available on the Internet to help you determine this. 3. Investigate the level of ozone emissions, noise, dust and heat from your printing equipment. The lower the emission levels, the healthier the environment for your employees. This will help you determine what to look for in your next purchase. 4. Choose equipment that complies with the more stringent 2007 ENERGY STAR requirements. Product listings can be found
Two years into a five-year lease, York Technical College Printing Services outgrew its Xerox DocuColor 12. Demand for color pages had skyrocketed to about 30,000 color prints per month. “Because of the slow, internal processor and only running at 12 copies per minute, the Doc12 ran all day and most nights after we left,” says Steve Mauney, Printing Services manager at the Rock Hill, S.C., college. So when the contract neared its end, the in-plant researched all brands and models of color printers in the 25-50 cpm range, using Xerox quality as a baseline. The department made a test CD and took its
THROUGHOUT MY years as editor of IPG, what I’ve enjoyed most has been meeting the managers who make up this industry. I’ve found them to be extremely approachable and accommodating, and I count many of them among my friends. One man I’ve run into at conferences a few times over the years is Wes Friesen, who oversees Portland General Electric’s in-plant. Our last meeting, at the TransPromo Summit in New York, inspired me to pursue a feature story about his printing operation. Imagine my surprise when I learned I wasn’t the only one impressed with his in-plant. NAPL has just announced
It would be hard to find a more enthusiastic supporter of his vendor than Tom Aleman. “We are very happy with Océ,” declares Aleman, supervisor of the print shop at West Contra Costa Unified School District. His Richmond, Calif.-based in-plant runs a host of Océ equipment, the most recent additions being a pair of VarioPrint 6150 printers with duplex printing capabilities. Since switching to Oce, he says, “My crew couldn’t be happier. My supervisors are very pleased about the production we’ve been able to [maintain]. We’re projected this year to do 20 million copies.” In addition to the 6150s—which each have an inline booklet maker—the shop
Earlier this week, Océ celebrated 130 years of business in a special ceremony in The Netherlands that included the great grandson of the company’s founding father. In a speech to mark the occasion, CEO Rokus van Iperen detailed Océ’s achievements since 1877, when Lodewijk van der Grinten, a pharmacist, began large-scale production of an edible yellow coloring for butter and margarine. In 1920, his grandson Louis started the company’s document-copying activities. He invented a new ammonia-free diazo process for copying technical drawings. He called it “O.C.” “In the following decades, Océ grew that business to become the number one supplier of diazo,” said Iperen. “Today

OUR IN-PLANT just made a big change in the way it does business: we sprang for “Big Color”—a digital color press. Over an eight-month period we considered the Canon C7000VP, the HP Indigo 3050, the IKON CPP 650, the Kodak NexPress 2100, the Konica Minolta bizhub PRO C6500, Océ’s CPS900 and CS650 Pro, and Xerox’s DocuColor 6060, 7000 and 260. Many of you are considering a similar acquisition, so I will share some aspects of our experience with you.
