Printing a catalog of art pieces is an extremely difficult project because the customer is comparing the proofs to the original works of art. But University of Oklahoma (OU) Printing Services pulled it off with style last June when it printed an exquisite catalog of Native American art for a show at OU's Fred Jones Museum of Art.
A partnership announced between Heidelberg USA and Unisource Worldwide combines Heidelberg’s print media products, service and expertise with the paper and logistics knowledge of the Unisource organization for the benefit of printers in the United States.
After putting up with some very old and slow cutting machines for several decades, Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) Printing Services recently upgraded to a new Heidelberg POLAR 92 XT guillotine cutter with a jogging unit, scale and lifts.
The in-plant for Spring Industries, in Lancaster, S.C., recently installed a Heidelberg ECO 105 folder-gluer with automatic lock bottom capabilities and a four-channel, three-gun, cold glue system. The installation marks the 20-employee shop’s initial foray into folding carton packaging.
The Ipex 2010 show, in Birmingham, UK, is in full swing right now. Many vendors are showing off new technology at the show, a lot of which uses ink-jet. For example, Xerox is previewing its high-speed production ink-jet technology, designed to produce high impact color on low cost papers. It is showing an ink-jet device using 56 durable piezo-electric, drop-on-demand print heads with more than 49,000 nozzles jetting nearly two billion ink drops per second. The printer produces more than 2,000 color images per minute.
Heidelberg USA has donated a Stitchmaster ST 350 saddlestitcher to Printing Industries of America (PIA) for use in the organization’s research and training facility in Sewickley, PA. Installation is scheduled to start in June.
The new saddlestitcher is the latest addition to the wealth of Heidelberg equipment and software previously donated to PIA for the purpose of industry education and research. The association currently has a Speedmaster SM 102 P sheetfed press, Printmaster QM 46 press, Polar 137 XT cutter, Stahl B-26 folder and a Prinect 3.5 workflow solution.
The National Government Publishing Association's recent conference gave attendees a chance to witness the recovery of New Orleans.
IT'S CONFERENCE season again, which means that in between writing and editing articles for this issue, I've been dashing off to in-plant events around the country. In the past two weeks I've been to two in-plant meetings (plus the On Demand Show) and talked with dozens of managers about what's happening in their shops.
WHEN MARK Dixon inherited the lead role at the University of Oregon's Printing and Mailing Services in December from long-time Director J.R. Gaddis, he started by taking a back-to-basics approach and stamping it with his own progressive twist.
