In the days leading up to drupa, which began yesterday in Dusseldorf, Germany, Landa Corp., led by Indigo founder Benny Landa, announced three strategic partnerships with three leading offset press manufacturers. Komori, manroland and Heidelberg will all collaborate on the development of printing presses using Landa's new Nanographic digital printing process.
After opening its 19 halls to the public yesterday, drupa 2012 is in full swing right now in Dusseldorf, Germany. Xerox gathered a dozen or so university in-plant managers together recently in Birmingham, Ala., for its annual Higher Education Customer Advisory Council Meeting. Attended by in-plants from Yale, Penn State, RIT, Bucknell, Villanova, University of Louisville, Ithaca College, Citrus College and several others, the meeting featured interesting speakers, excellent discussions and a tour of the University of Alabama-Birmingham’s in-plant.
Ted Bailey’s dedication to printing began at an early age. During his high school years in Ontario, Calif., Bailey, now manager of printing and graphic services at Boise State University, worked for a commercial printer, along with his brother, doing miscellaneous bindery work. After taking some graphic arts classes, he was hooked.

Before adding a digital color press in 2010, Donna Cooper Horbelt says her in-plant at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) was not nearly as busy as she wanted it to be. "I was losing color copy business to everybody in town," recalls the director of Auxiliary Enterprises, Printing and Media Services. "Our quality just wasn't good enough."
