Fujifilm to Use Methane Power
June 29, 2007

FUJIFILM will begin using methane gas from a local community landfill to power approximately 40 percent of its primary U.S. manufacturing complex in Greenwood, S.C. Through an arrangement with Greenwood County and Methane Credit, LLC, methane gas will be extracted from the landfill and piped into the Fujifilm complex, where it will then be used in two of the facility’s four boilers. The facility will use approximately 197 billion BTUs of methane-generated energy from the landfill per year—about as much energy used to heat more than 5,000 homes annually. By using the methane as energy Fujifilm is preventing methane emissions, which are 20 times more

The Burden of PROOF
October 1, 2006

DESPITE ALL the talk in the industry of virtual proofing, Ken Johnson still thinks customers prefer a proof they can hold in their hands. “Their eyes gloss over [when proofing] on the computer screen,” says Johnson, director of Printing Services at Ball State University, in Muncie, Ind. His in-plant uses Kodak’s MatchPrint ProofPro software along with Screen USA’s Trueflow workflow. Proofs are printed on a MatchPrint ProofPro 2610 ink-jet printer. But out at Western Growers, in Irvine, Calif., Robert Delgado feels much differently. His in-plant e-mails PDF proofs to customers, and he says they have been satisfied with the arrangement. Proofs always match the

Leaving A Digital Legacy at the University of Tennessee

CTP Speeds Turnaround Times in Texas
September 1, 2006

“We had to reduce turn times,” declares Richard Beto, director of document services at the University of Texas at Austin. “It’s all ‘now, now, now.’ They want their jobs now.” This is what drove the 68-employee in-plant to install a new semi-automatic Fuji Saber Luxel Vx 9600 violet computer-to-plate device with a Rampage front end in July. The platesetter is making metal plates for the shop’s 40˝ and 29˝ presses. “The manual process was just taking too long,” adds Beto. By cutting out some of those extra steps, the in-plant was able to downsize its prepress staff, reducing costs. Print quality has also improved
