Thirty years is a long time to keep a press running—even a Heidelberg. But over the past three decades, the folks at the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) did their best to take care of their four-color Heidelberg MOVP perfector, even if it did cost them an average of $60,000 a year for repairs.
“Just being in the room when decisions are being made, a lot of times, is the biggest challenge” for in-plants, declares Chuck Werninger, director of Administrative Services at the Houston Independent School District (HISD). “A lot of shops are deleted from the plan before they ever hear about the plan.”

Poring over 15 years of her in-plant's data recently, Tammy Golden made an intriguing discovery. Since 1999—the year she started at the State of Tennessee's Division of Printing and Media Services—annual revenue has stayed relatively consistent, despite the fact that print volume has been declining.
Though most of the high-quality newsletters, annual reports and recruitment material for Burlington County College is printed on its in-plant’s four-color Ryobi 524GE, the six-employee operation still produces a good deal of short-run work on its digital printers. Those devices recently got an upgrade, which has improved the quality and consistency of the Pemberton, N.J., shop’s digitally printed pieces.
This year's SGIA Product of the Year competition was held at the 2014 Expo in Las Vegas, October 22-24. The contest showcased the best printers, technologies and consumables from the specialty imaging community. "Whether they were a seasoned company or an industry newcomer, each and every entry came to win," said Ray Weiss, SGIA’s digital imaging specialist.
As Mark Baker sees it, providing prompt, painless service is imperative at his company.
