PRINT 09 begins just 3 weeks from today. As a bonus for in-plants planning to attend the Chicago trade show, In-Plant Graphics and the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association are each presenting a separate session, exclusively for in-plants.
The first of the two sessions will be a breakfast roundtable on Monday, September 14, from 8:30-10:00 (before the show opens). This event, sponsored by Ricoh, will focus on digital color printing, and will take place in room N-136 in McCormick Place
If there was one recurring theme in the sessions at the recent In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) conference, it was this: In these tough economic times, in-plants need to be more proactive than ever about finding and creating new business opportunities. Last month, more than 100 in-plant managers traveled to Rochester, N.Y., to learn just that. Though attendance was down from last year, it was impressive nonetheless in this economic climate (especially after the cancellation of the ACUP conference in April due to travel bans at universities).
Paper job tickets are a thing of the past at the Washington State Department of Printing. Thanks to the in-plant’s new EFI Monarch print production and management solution, the Tumwater, Wash.-based operation now uses digital job tickets. This not only saves time and printing costs, it is expected to reduce spoilage and rework over time.

A lot has been happening lately at the Washington State Department of Printing. In June, the 130-employee operation installed its first digital press, a Kodak NexPress 3000, accompanied by a Kodak Glossing Unit. Then the Olympia-based in-plant announced it had received its chain of custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), becoming the first state government in-plant to do so. Now the in-plant has inked a deal to replace its existing shop management system with the EFI Hagen OA system, with plans to go live in January.
The terrorist attacks last week in Mumbai, India, have forced the postponement of a major graphic arts show. The FESPA Digital India 2008 show, scheduled to take place there December 14-16, has been delayed until February.
The show focuses largely on wide-format digital printing equipment and features such vendors as Agfa, EFI, Epson and HP.
