Mississippi In-plant is a Quick Study

Print jobs can be as ephemeral as fashion at the Research and Curriculum Unit. As educational priorities and customer needs change, so do the in-plant’s tasks, making regular equipment appraisals especially important.

“A few years ago, we began printing newly created test booklets that were bar coded and saddle-stitched,” Jones relates. “Now we no longer produce them because that testing is conducted online. We just serve as a backup.”

Trends in education have also resulted in some new jobs for the in-plant.

“Right now, there’s a focus on redesigning education,” Jones observes. “We just did a run of high-quality 24- to 36-page, four-color saddle-stitched booklets for teachers about that redesign and what it would mean to them.”

Changes in the types of work the shop produces have an obvious impact on future equipment leases, so Jones is always looking ahead.

“We try to anticipate our needs and what the technology will be like five years down the road,” he says.

FOR THE in-plant at the Research and Curriculum Unit (RCU) at Mississippi State University, there's always something new to learn about printing—and something new to print about learning.

The mission of the RCU—a cooperative endeavor of Mississippi State University (MSU) and the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE)—is to "enhance intellectual and professional development of Mississippi students and educators, while applying knowledge and educational research to the lives of the people of the state."
