In a way, calculating the sales per employee ratio is a great equalizer, putting small in-plants on a level playing field with larger ones to see which are really more productive. It's not a perfect number, though. Some don't pay rent or other expenses that are usually part of running a business, so their numbers will be higher. Some must break even with their budget figure at the end of the year, so they never reach their sales potential.
