Washington Department of Printing Spared
After months of hearings and name calling by senators pushing for its closure, the Washington State Department of Printing has been spared. But it won't be business as usual for the Tumwater, Wash.-based in-plant. It will be consolidated into the newly formed Department of Enterprise Services, along with other agencies.
Senate Bill 5931, which passed on the last day of the legislative session, authorizes the creation of the DES. It also makes it easier for agencies to go directly to private print shops with major jobs. This major government restructuring is expected to save $18 million for the state.
The state's in-plant, which was recently named IPMA's 2011 Management Award winner, faces some difficult changes ahead. On Monday, IPG's Bob Neubauer caught up with State Printer Jean-Luc Devis while both were in Oregon. In a new IPG video, Devis praises his staff for their hard work in these difficult times.
