Last week's presidential debate at the University of Nevada - Las Vegas was a big deal at the university, and particularly for its in-plant. UNLV Print & Design Services worked closely with the president's office, media services and many other departments to produce large banners, flags, media guides, parking flyers, podium badges and a dozen more products. Some were outsourced, but the majority were printed in-house on the shop's new Konica Minolta bizhub PRESS C1100 color press and other equipment. Many jobs required 24-hour turnarounds (or faster). A run of 25,000 parking flyers, for example, had to be printed overnight.
"When the dust settled we figure that we made about $75,000 in revenue," remarks Manager Tom Tozier.
All this high-profile work has put the in-plant in the spotlight, he says, showing its ability to step up to the challenge and demonstrating the value of having an in-house operation
"We met deadlines and saved thousands of dollars — something a commercial operation couldn't come close to doing," he says. "A real thrill was that the entire university community came together as a team, taking pride pride in showcasing UNLV and being a part of this historical event. This was quite an experience, and we're looking forward to hosting again in four years."
