University of West Georgia In-plant Commended for Improvements
University Business Magazine has lauded The University of West Georgia’s Publications and Printing department for major productivity and revenue improvements. In a December article, the magazine noted that process improvements at the in-plant increased revenue 42 percent in one year, from $470,000 in FY2011 to more than $670,000 in FY 2012.
The Carrollton, Ga.-based in-plant was given a mandate last year to become self-funded by 2013. It used business process redesign and lean six sigma to identify opportunities for improvement. Director Sally Roberts (who gave a presentation about this makeover at June's IPMA conference) identified products and services needed by the campus but purchased elsewhere. The in-plant found equipment to produce these products, redesigned how printing work was completed and eliminated non-value-added parts of the process.
The changes generated a 23.5 percent productivity improvement for the department, the article says. Read the full story here.
