In December, University of North Texas Print & Mail Services held its most successful open house to date, bringing 140 people into its in-plant for tours, demonstrations and food.
Director Jimmy Friend says he targeted vice presidents, deans and department heads this time, and got an impressive number of them to show up. His main goal, Friend says, was to show decision makers like these that his in-plant was not just an “old-fashioned print shop,” but a technologically advanced digital production operation.
Over the past year, the in-plant has installed both a five-color, 29˝ Ryobi 755XLW press and a Ryobi 3404 DI direct imaging press. Showing off these power horses was a big part of the open house, though Friend acknowledges the shop’s HP Indigo 5500 digital color press still drew much of the attention. In-plant staff demonstrated the HP Indigo’s variable data printing capabilities, and impressed onlookers with quick job changeovers.
During the open house, the five-color Ryobi churned out posters, which were given to attendees, along with gift bags.
