University of Delaware In-plant Puts "Printing" Back in its Name

Though some in-plants have replaced the word "Printing" in their names with "Communications" the University of Delaware's in-plant has just done the opposite. The 19-employee in-plant has rechristened itself "University Printing," after years of being called the "Graphic Communication Center."

"When I speak with people on campus and say that I am the manager of the Graphic Communications Center, I get that look of 'what do you do?' and I always answer, 'we are the in-plant printing facility for the University,'” explains Rodney Brown, manager of University Printing.

The name change also serves to reflect an recent increase in printing firepower at the in-plant. This past summer, the shop added one of the first Xerox iGen4 digital presses. (See IPG article and video on the installation.)

"This machine will allow us to do more variable data jobs, and the quality is so good that it is hard to tell whether the job was run offset or digitally," says Brown.

The newly renamed University Printing, which also recently received Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody certification, will hold an open house on Thursday, Oct. 22.
