It unfortunately took bad news to make the paper, but the story in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on the closing of University Printing Services at Texas Tech University is compelling reading. The facility that housed the in-plant was emptied this week to make way for its conversion into research space.
The newspaper account noted that the shop had a $600,000 deficit last year that was covered with reserve funds. University administrators reportedly explored moving the in-plant to an off-campus facility, but the cost of moving the heavy printing machinery was deemed prohibitive, according to the article.
Just this past January, In-plant Graphics reported on University Printing Services' plans to add a second offset press.
