The University of Delaware’s in-plant has enhanced its digital print quality with an iGen4 digital press.

Bulking Up The Back End

Books are big at the University of Delaware—and getting bigger. As page counts have risen, Graphic Communications has found it harder to produce them on its 10-station collator/stitcher.

“Any time you went past 40 pages, you had to collate twice, hand marry it and hand stitch it,” remarks Rodney Brown, manager.

In July, the in-plant solved that problem once and for all by installing a new 20-station Standard Horizon 5500 StitchLiner.

“So we doubled our capacity,” boasts Brown.

The new setup includes scoring, inserting and three-knife trimming. It’s able to produce 5,000 books an hour, compared to 3,000 an hour previously. With hand collating eliminated, the shop is now able to bid on much bigger books.

“That’s saving a lot of time and labor,” Brown says.

TUCKED INSIDE a nondescript brick building at the edge of campus, the University of Delaware’s Graphic Communications Center has brought a lot of favorable attention to the university in recent years. The quality of its offset printing has earned the in-plant numerous awards, including two Best of Show honors in the In-Print contest.
