We have finished collecting the data for our annual ranking of the largest in-plants. As we prepare the lists for our December issue, we've decided to reveal some of the data a little early. Here are the largest government in-plants, ranked by both sales and employees.
The Government Publishing Office and the state of California top both lists, but the state of Louisiana has supplanted the state of Washington for the No. 3 spot in our annual sales ranking. Louisiana's 2024 revenues of $36,424,940 represent a 21% jump over its 2023 sales of $30,089,000.
The two municipal in-plants on the list – the California cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles – have almost the same number of employees (18.5 versus 18), yet the City by the Bay generated $2,461,722 more revenue in 2024. Here's a look at the rankings:

Bob has served as editor of In-plant Impressions since October of 1994. Prior to that he served for three years as managing editor of Printing Impressions, a commercial printing publication. Mr. Neubauer is very active in the U.S. in-plant industry. He attends all the major in-plant conferences and has visited more than 180 in-plant operations around the world. He has given presentations to numerous in-plant groups in the U.S., Canada and Australia, including the Association of College and University Printers and the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. He also coordinates the annual In-Print contest, co-sponsored by IPMA and In-plant Impressions.
