After collecting the data for our annual ranking of the largest in-plants, we decided to break out some of the various industries into rankings of their own. Here are the 19 largest government in-plants, ranked by employees and then by sales. This list has been updated and expanded from the version published in December 2016.
Like last year, the Government Publishing Office and the State of California top both lists, but after that, the states of Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio, Colorado and Missouri vie for the top ranks, shifting positions from one list to the other. The cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco boast the largest municipal in-plants, with LA beating San Fran in employee count, but the City by the Bay churning out more annual sales.
