Steve Goodman, director of Campus Services at the University of Illinois at Springfield, has died of cancer. He was 58.
Well known among attendees of the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP) conference, Mr. Goodman took the UIS position in April 2001 after spending 15 years as manager of print and mail services at California State University in Fresno.
When asked, in a 2001 interview, why he chose to stay in the in-plant industry rather than move to the commercial sector, he remarked, “The in-plant allows you to actively work with an organization and help an organization grow.” And that’s exactly what he strived to do. Under his direction, the UIS in-plant purchased a four-color Hamada B-452, a Mitsubishi DPX platesetter and a Standard collator/saddle stitcher.
“These purchases that Steve spearheaded turned us from a ‘forms and books’ printing operation to a true marketing operation for UIS,” says Sara Storm, interim director, Campus Services. “Steve brought with him a wealth of mail knowledge that no one here could even compare to. We began to process automated mailings for the campus, and the business has grown steadily over the years. He understood the importance of the print/mail functions, and how they were so intertwined.”
Steve fought to move the Mail Center into the same building as the print shop. He also created a billing reports/chargeback system, which reduced the manual input of monthly charges. The shop now provides real-time information to customers.
“He pushed innovative thoughts and processes while stressing we do them from a frugal financial position,” recalled Larz Gaydos, printing production coordinator at UIS. “Work smarter, see ways to do things and provide services that clients need—but keep the costs in check.”
An assertive man with a booming Bronx accent, Mr. Goodman was never shy about voicing his opinion. He could always be counted on to contribute to the Q&A portion of any ACUP session.
“One of the greatest things that he taught us was that we were not in the printing business—we are in the communication business,” Storm says.
This motto guided Steve’s personal life as well. A friendly, outgoing person, he had a deep desire to help his fellow managers, and was always quick to share his industry knowledge.
“Steve did so much for us, and he will be greatly missed here at UIS,” says Storm.
“I garnered from our long and frequent lunches that those of us who saw ourselves as simply printers would fall by the wayside, and that we should think of what we do as communicators and utilize all the myriad tools at our disposal for that intent,” adds Gaydos.
IPG joins all of Steve Goodman’s friends in mourning his loss.
