SGIA supplier members have donated nearly $40,000 in prizes for screen printing and graphic imaging-sublimation secondary and post-secondary students and their schools at the 2017 SkillsUSA Championship, held as part of the 53rd annual National Leadership and Skills Conference (Louisville, Kentucky, June 19–23).
Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and labor organizations, and test competencies are set by industry. Students participate in either the secondary (high school or vocational school) or post-secondary school (college, technical school, etc.) divisions.
Johnny Shell, Vice President, Technical Services, SGIA, chairs the committees that run the screen printing technology and graphic imaging-sublimation competitions. Industry volunteers serve as judges.
“We participate in SkillsUSA because it helps cultivate our industry’s future workforce and it helps educators and students become aware of the opportunities our industry provides,” said Shell. “We’ve even seen the competitions lead to jobs for some of the students.”
SGIA members participating as volunteers or donating prizes include: BBC Industries/Black Body, ChromaLuxe/Unisub, Conde Systems Inc, Easiway Systems Inc, GraphicElephants.com, Great Dane Graphics, Impressions Magazine, International Coatings Inc, KIWO Inc (Kissel & Wolf GmbH), The M&R Companies, NEWMAN ROLLER FRAMES mfg. by Stretch Devices Inc., PolyOne Corporation, Ryonet, Sawgrass, StahlsTV.com, Vapor Apparel and Vastex International Inc.
“Students train year round for the opportunity to compete, and we would not be able to run the competition for these dedicated students without the help from donors,” Shell added.
