RIT In-plant Named PIXI Winner
When Rochester Institute of Technology’s HUB Print & Postal Services was recognized at the recent 2008 Printing Innovation with Xerox Imaging (PIXI) Awards ceremony in Chicago, it was one of only a few in-plants to ever receive one of these prestigious awards. The 21-employee shop won a third-place award in the Books and Manuals category for printing the ImagineRIT Reporter magazine using a Xerox iGen3 110 Digital Production Press.
“We were ecstatic,” says Director John C. Meyer. “We realize how wide a range of entries there are from, really, across the world. It was astounding to go to this ceremony and find out people were there from Japan and Bahrain and Australia.”
The in-plant was honored for much more than just printing the magazine.
“It’s the innovation part that really sets apart all these entries,” Meyer notes.
The Reporter issue that received the award used a combination of web offset and digital printing, and marked a collaboration between RIT’s Print Applications Lab, RIT students on staff at the Reporter and the in-plant. More than 430 photos were taken of students, and these were used, in various combinations, to print 10,000 unique copies of the weekly magazine. The original idea and the bulk of the file preparation was done by the students, led by Production Manager John Carew, now an RIT graduate.
The distribution of the magazine created a frenzy on campus, Meyer said, as students searched for the issue with their photo or someone they knew on the cover. Several thousand copies were picked up in a matter of hours. The issue was used the next day as the center piece for the Reporter magazine booth at the RIT Innovation Festival.
