The In-plant Printing and Mailing Association's first Road Show event of the year was a smashing success. About 85 in-plant managers and others showed up on Feb. 7 at the Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center in Commerce, Calif., outside of Los Angeles.
Joined by IPMA Executive Director Mike Loyd and President-Elect Sherri Isbell, the group toured the massive 185,000-square-foot facility, which features a six-unit Goss Sunday 2000 web press, a five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 sheetfed press and a continuous-feed HP Indigo W7200 digital press. Last year, the In-Print 2016 Best of Show-winning in-plant added a Fujifilm J Press 540W high-speed production inkjet web press to the mix.
Jud Posner and Angela Furness welcomed the crowd and talked about how their operation came into being about eight years ago. None of the operators had previous printing experience when they started. All were trained from scratch at Cal Poly and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Also on the docket, LA Postmaster Ken Snavely offered some information on the future of the USPS and ways to save on postage. Then Ray Bauer from Ricoh spoke about industry trends in wide-format printing.
The Church of Scientology International Dissemination and Distribution Center ranked No. 4 on IPG's December list of the largest in-plants according to sales. The in-plant cranks out millions of magazines, brochures, direct mail pieces and educational materials each month, in 17 languages.
An extremely clean and orderly facility, the in-plant handles much more than ink on paper. Garment printing and embroidering, wood cutting, metal work, audio visual and more are all part of the 106-employee operation.
