HUDSON, NH—April 30, 2007—Presstek Inc. (Nasdaq: PRST), the leading manufacturer and marketer of digital offset printing business solutions, following the release of its 10K reported a 25 percent increase in 2006 shipments of its Direct Imaging (DI®) presses over the previous year and a 72 percent increase in DI equipment revenue over 2005.
Significantly exceeding market expectations, Presstek shipped 244 DI presses in 2006, and more than 3,000 DI presses are now installed worldwide. Helping drive this record number of DI sales were the new Presstek 52DI and 34DI presses.
“DI presses have grown into a mainstream product that has been embraced by an increasing number of commercial and in-plant printers around the globe,” said Todd Chambers, Presstek, chief marketing officer. “Their ease of use, fast turnaround times, superior quality and low cost per page help printers deliver a higher level of customer satisfaction and increased profitability.”
Print buyers can easily recognize the quality output of DI printing. When combined with the added productivity and ease of use a DI workflow brings, the impact on a business can be significant.
“We are acquiring at least two new clients a week, which we attribute largely to the draw of the DI press,” said Chuck Rothestein, president of Carleton Communications in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Competitive Advantage for Short Runs
According to InfoTrends market data, run lengths between 250 and 10,000 impressions – the fastest growing segment of the print market – are particularly suited to Presstek DI solutions. Presstek DI presses feature faster turnaround times and offer lower cost without sacrificing the quality expected from a four-color offset press.
“Presstek’s family of DI presses continues to offer a competitive advantage in the short-run growth market segment,” said Jim Hamilton, InfoTrends analyst. “A typical job on a Presstek 52DI costs about half as much per page as a comparable job on a toner-based digital device.”
With overall run lengths going down, Presstek DI products are well positioned help printers meet the needs of today’s market. According to data from Strategies for Management Inc., Presstek’s products allow printers to compress their workflow to eliminate costly steps, providing for better, richer and more predictable printing.
DI presses are engineered to meet the growing short-run color market by providing high quality output times and ease of use while reducing total cost of operation. Dana Wilson, of Landmark Impressions, in Woburn, Massachusetts, said, “With the DI, my lower cost of goods allows me to be both more competitive and more profitable in the short-run four-color arena.”
