Green Sheets
AbitibiBowater AbitibiBowater has been taking action to help combat climate change for several years. Since 2000, the company has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 32 percent per ton. The progress to date can be attributed to a company-wide focus on improved efficiency and to switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. In 2008, AbitibiBowater was 46 percent self-sufficient from renewable sources for its total energy needs. A new biomass boiler at the Fort Frances, Ontario, mill produces 46 MW of “green” electricity. In fact, 66 percent of the fuel used in the company’s boilers is supplied by carbon-neutral biomass such as sawdust and wood residues.
Appleton
Appleton’s long-standing commitment to the environment led to the development of its patented vegetable-oil-based capsule technology in 2001 and is the driving force behind its ISO 14001 certification. It is reportedly the only major North American carbonless paper producer to have all of its facilities meet this internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems. Appleton has earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification and offers a range of FSC-certified carbonless products. For more than 20 years, NCR paper brand Recover has offered 50 percent recycled content, including 30 percent post-consumer waste.
Boise
A commitment to sustainability guides Boise’s social, environmental and business actions. Boise aims to serve customers by working safely, enhancing the communities where it operates and using natural resources intelligently. Boise will continue its sustainable excellence in 2009 by increasing it’s portfolio of chain-of-custody-certified paper products and continuing its commitment to recycled paper products. As part of its membership in Chicago Climate Exchange, it plans to achieve an absolute greenhouse gas emission reduction of 6 percent below its baseline by the end of 2010. Boise will host its second Annual Environmental Summit on March 4th in Chicago.
Domtar
Domtar is committed to independent, third-party certifications in its forests and at all of its facilities. Domtar is reportedly the first North American pulp and paper manufacturer to receive FSC certification for every stage of the supply chain, from the forest floor to the customer’s door. Domtar is one of the founding members of the Canadian Boreal Leadership Council, making it one of North America’s most prominent industrial supporters of forest conservation. It has significantly increased energy efficiency and the usage of renewable energy at its mills, and is committed to further reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Finch Paper
Since the turn of the 20th Century, Finch Paper has practiced sustainable forestry, generated most of its own power, and made most of its own pulp to produce high-quality, affordable uncoated printing papers for offset and digital printing. Finch employs a team of professional foresters who personally care for more than 180,000 acres of sustainably managed forests, which provide wood to its mill. This includes more than 160,000 acres owned by The Nature Conservancy. Finch has both Forest Management and chain-of-custody certifications from the FSC and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program.
Glatfelter
Glatfelter’s commitment to environmental initiatives embodies its motto “Beyond Paper.” It is triple chain-of-custody certified under FSC, SFI and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) standards. All Glatfelter carbonless products utilize Nature-Solv, “The Environmentally Responsible Carbonless Capsule.” NatureSolv capsules use soy, palm and coconut oils to create a paper that is kind to the world and great for printing. Xcelerator PLUS Digital Carbonless features Nature-Solv, and is reportedly the only carbonless sheet on the market that is FSC certified on every stocking item. No special request is needed.
InteliCoat
InteliCoat is dedicated to conducting its business with maximum sensitivity to environmental compliance and concern. To date, the environmental procedures, process and planning activities at InteliCoat’s Massachusetts headquarters and production facility have produced measurable results, including reduced waste generation, increased recycling of solid waste and raised consumer awareness. InteliCoat is actively working with the Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Partnership to create of a set of guidelines that will help printers develop sustainable business practices.
International Paper
International Paper’s Sustainability Web site shares the company’s commitment to ensuring responsible stewardship of natural resources. By focusing on three key platform areas (managing natural resources, reducing environmental footprint and building strategic partnerships), the Sustainability Web site shows that International Paper has been a leader in environmental responsibility for more than 110 years. The site features a searchable database on stewardship, performance, social responsibility, education and more. It provides a clear, concise perspective on forest certification, recycling, conservation, environmental and safety performance, ethics and the company’s sustainability initiatives.
Mohawk Fine Papers
Mohawk Fine Papers utilizes 100 percent wind-generated energy to manufacture all of its products. As an EPA Climate Leader partner, Mohawk has conducted an emissions inventory and established a five-year greenhouse gas reduction goal that is tracked and monitored by EPA. Its Web-based Environmental Savings Calculator helps in-plants publicly promote their use of environmentally preferable paper. Mohawk currently offers over 2,000 papers made with recycled content and over 858 carbon neutral papers. That portfolio is constantly growing as the market demands more. Mohawk’s use of post-consumer waste fiber has increased every year for the last decade. It has upgraded steam plants with low-emission boilers to reduce fuel consumption and combustion emissions. Every Mohawk mill uses real-time electric energy management systems to conserve energy.
Neenah Paper
Neenah Paper’s new heat transfer papers use CLASSIC CREST Paper as their base substrate. This premium bond base paper is FSC-certified, Green e-certified (made with renewable energy) and manufactured Carbon Neutral, as defined by the Chicago Climate Exchange. FSC certification ensures that the standards and guidelines of certification are met from the forest to the finished product. Neenah’s heat transfer papers meet all of the most stringent requirements for lead and phthalates in children’s products as outlined in the Consumer Product Safety Act of 2008. This Act requires mandatory testing and certification for specific products.
NewPage
To help reduce the nation’s dependency on limited supplies of fossil fuels, NewPage uses alternative renewable resources while striving to reduce the amount of energy it uses. Burning biomass or wood waste meets the majority of the company’s energy demands and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This renewable energy source comes from forests managed for sustainable use. NewPage selects the wood fiber used in the production of its coated paper only from areas identified and designated for harvesting and only from verified, sustainable sources. NewPage actively supports the World Resources Institute and the Environmental Investigation Agency’s partnership to combat illegal logging worldwide.
Sappi Fine Paper North America
Sappi Fine Paper North America (SFPNA) manufactures products in responsible and sustainable ways. Each of SFPNA’s North American coated fine paper mills is triple chain of custody certified (PEFC, SFI, FSC). SFPNA generates more than 75 percent of its total energy from renewable resources and says it has the lowest reported carbon emissions amongst its peers. SFPNA employs a full-time director of technical marketing and sustainable development, Laura M. Thompson, PhD, to manage its sustainability program.
Wausau Paper
Wausau Paper rebranded its Royal SilkPlus paper to Royal Resource, an environmentally preferred addition to the company’s Royal brand of premium writing, text and cover papers. The changing from Royal SilkPlus to Royal Resource has enhanced the entire Royal line by offering more sustainable papers in the colors, weights and textures most in demand, while also maintaining Royal’s high performance and affordable luxury qualities. Royal Resource contains a new 100 percent recycled post-consumer fiber sheet in White. All Royal papers are FSC certified and nearly all Royal Resource grades are also Green Seal Certified and contain at least 30 percent recycled post-consumer fiber.
Xerox
The Xerox paper policy ensures that its products are produced from an effective wood procurement process, with sustainable forestry practices and continual mill improvements that exceed mandatory regulatory compliance. Xerox is introducing papers that are independently certified to sustainable forest management standards. Xerox Color Xpressions Planet 20 Paper is a 20 percent post-consumer, recycled-content offering certified by the FSC. Xerox’s Business Multipurpose 4200 Paper now carries SFI and FSC certification. Xerox’s High Yield Business Paper is made of mechanical fiber and uses half as many trees in its production as traditional paper. Xerox’s Paper and Supplies Sustainability Web portal provides easy-to-use resources to help customers assess their paper choices and the environmental impact throughout the paper’s life cycle.
