Two years into a five-year lease, York Technical College Printing Services outgrew its Xerox DocuColor 12. Demand for color pages had skyrocketed to about 30,000 color prints per month.
“Because of the slow, internal processor and only running at 12 copies per minute, the Doc12 ran all day and most nights after we left,” says Steve Mauney, Printing Services manager at the Rock Hill, S.C., college.
So when the contract neared its end, the in-plant researched all brands and models of color printers in the 25-50 cpm range, using Xerox quality as a baseline. The department made a test CD and took its own stock to test all of the machines on its list.
“Xerox had the quality we needed,” Mauney explains—but its service was lacking.
“The one recurring problem over the years was lines through the copies,” he says. This never was resolved. So in the end, the in-plant went with the Océ CS650, which it installed in August. It boasts two large-capacity drawers with dehumidifiers and can duplex 10-point and 12-point cover stock. The CS650 also has a 5,000-sheet finisher with rollout carts, which is capable of accommodating 13x19˝ sheets.
“During this time, Océ had its entire line of equipment placed on the state of South Carolina copier/printer contract,” Mauney says. “Because of this, we did not have to go out to bid, and could lease straight from the South Carolina contract.”
Printing Services produces training manuals that run 600-1,000 pages in length, with about half of the pages in color and the other half in black and white.
“The CS650 has enabled us to produce these manuals two-up, duplexed on 11x17˝. It has cut our turnaround time in less than half,” Mauney says. “Also, since 11x17˝ and larger prints are only billed as one click, we have cut our cost in half.
“In addition to the training manuals, we are also able to produce full-color postcards nine to a page. This translates to...about 5 cents each,” Mauney says. “Everyone loves color, and we print thousands of brochures and flyers. The Océ’s quality is so good, in fact, that we also print our school’s business cards on them.”
