New York State has become the first state to preference facilities certified by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) for procurement of printed products. SGP is recognized within a systematic program created by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo that is aimed at making all government agencies examine ways in which they can become more sustainable.
Executive Order 4 (EO 4) http://ogs.ny.gov/EO/4/Default.asp establishes a State Green Procurement and Agency Sustainability Program, directs state agencies, public authorities and public benefit corporations to green their procurements and to implement sustainability initiatives. Under the recently released EO 4, New York State entities are encouraged to issue contracts for printing in which contractors meet SGP criteria. The specifications can be found at http://ogs.ny.gov/EO/4/Docs/Finals/Printing.pdf.
“The inclusion for preferencing SGP certified facilities is significant as it formally recognizes the value that SGP certification provides for sustainability and sustainable print procurement,” commented Gary Jones, assistant vice president of Printing Industries of America and SGP board member. “This is the first step in wide scale recognition that facilities certified by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership are able to meet the needs of those print customers that have made sustainability a part of their print procurement specifications.”
