Major Expansion for Farmers Insurance In-plant
When it comes to in-house printing, few companies have embraced it as wholeheartedly as the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies.
“Our printing has always been internal,” proclaims Jerry Davies, director of media for the Los Angeles-based company. And last month Farmers made a move that ensures it will remain internal for years to come.
The company cut the ribbon on a 52,600-square-foot printing facility in Chino, Calif., and hired 75 employees to staff it. The renovation project took 10 months to complete and cost the company $17.6 million, which included a technology upgrade.
The decision to expand and upgrade the in-plant came as a result of the company’s growth in recent years, Davies says.
“In spite of a down economy, we are probably one of the fastest growing property and casualty companies in the country,” he contends. “When you...expand like we are expanding, obviously the need for the printing becomes even greater.”
The company never considered outsourcing, he says, because it wanted to retain control over its printing.
The facility will serve as a centralized print, storage and distribution center for the company. It will handle nearly a half-million pieces of mail each day, or up to 120 million mail pieces a year.
