LMI Adds Booklet Making System

Logistics Management Institute (LMI), a not-for-profit strategic consulting firm, recently upgraded the finishing capabilities of its Office Services department by installing a new Duplo near-line booklet making system in its McLean, Va., facility. Comprising the DSF-2000 sheet feeder, the DBM-500 booklet maker, the slit/cut/crease unit, and the ASM-500 square spine module, the new equipment is being used to produce marketing material and signature booklets for LMI, and to score tri-fold flyers and cards.

“With the slit/cut/crease unit, we no longer have to manually score the covers for our signature booklets, and it has eliminated the need to pre-trim the documents before binding,” notes Warren Murray, Office Services supervisor.

The five-employee in-plant uses a Xerox iGen4 and Xerox 700i, both installed in December, to produce its color printing. The reports that Office Services prints for LMI’s government clientele are perfect bound on a Standard Horizon BQ-270, Murray says. With the new Duplo equipment, though, the in-plant can now offer another option:

“With the addition of the ASM-500, it gives us the ability to do a square bind for a perfect bound look,” notes Murray.

The new Duplo equipment, installed by Duplo dealer Coleman One, has made the in-plant much more productive, eliminating the need to trim, score and fold items by hand. Murray notes that replacing the in-plant’s previous booklet maker had become a necessity.

“The age of the machine and the ability to get parts for the machine were the key drivers for the upgrade,” he says.

The in-plant’s five employees serve more than 500 on-site LMI employees and eight off-site offices. Murray feels the new equipment will allow the shop to provide even better service.

“The upgrade to the Duplo system has given more consistency with our final documents,” Murray says. “The system also gives us the ability to make small adjustments, which we did not have on our previous system.”
