UNC Chapel Hill Named Mail Center of the Year
University Mail Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was selected as Mail Center of the Year by the In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA), in recognition of its outstanding improvements in technology, cost savings and processes.
The mail team completed a major evolution of services in 2009. It installed an OPEX Mail Matrix inbound mail sorter to automate its daily sorting and delivery process. A return on investment on the $220,000 sorter is estimated to be less than 24 months.
Other notable accomplishments:
• The mail center dramatically cut mail sorting time from 48 to 15 FTE hours daily, giving back to the university 396 FTE hours each week.
• It eliminated five part-time temporary positions, totaling 76 hours per week.
• It consolidated campus delivery routes, reducing them from 13 to 10.
• It sped up the delivery of first-class mail.
• It traded its gas vehicle for an electric club car to facilitate the delivery of mail to a wide area of inner core campus buildings.
“Understanding the need to maximize efficiency, the remaining staff has embraced all of the changes,” says Lea Holt, Administrative Officer of University Mail Services. “After a short period of adjustment, they again own the process and understand why there is a need to remain flexible.”
