Guess Which In-plant Is Installing a Cut-Sheet Inkjet Press
At the Inkjet Summit in April, Chuck Werninger, senior manager of Administrative Services at the Houston Independent School District, dropped hints that his in-plant was looking seriously at a cut-sheet production inkjet press.
Then last month he started posting pictures on HISD Printing Services’ Facebook page of a mysterious new machine being installed in his facility, leaving his in-plant peers to make wild guesses.
Few of those guesses came close to the reality of the situation, though. HISD Printing Services has become the first in-plant to install a cut-sheet production inkjet press. The 47-employee in-plant has added a Canon Océ VarioPrint i300, which Canon Solutions America debuted with much fanfare last fall. The press, which replaces four Xerox Nuveras that were at the end of their leases, will print up to 294 letter images per minute with 600x600 dpi output.
“We invested in inkjet because it’s a much faster, more efficient, more reliable and significantly more cost-effective print production process than competing xerographic imaging technology while retaining the flexibility of feeding sheets instead of web rolls,” explains Werninger. “Also, because we have eight paper drawers and online finishing, we’ll be able to more efficiently produce the growing demand for cost-effective completed pieces while meet tighter SLAs that will better serve our teachers and the learning efforts of our district.”
