Have you ever felt the frustration of trying to explain to a young person how important printing is? The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) may have just made your life a little easier by publishing a comic book designed to educate readers on the important role printing has played, from the beginnings of civilization to today’s digital world.
“A comic book is a great way to communicate with young people,” explains Public Printer Bob Tapella.
Called “Squeaks Discovers Type!”, GPO’s very first comic book tells the story of elementary school student Jake who, with the help of a video game space mouse, learns about the invention of printing and its evolution through the ages. (Sorry, no Superhero in this comic, though wouldn’t you have loved to watch Inkman go to battle with the terrifying Dr. Kindle?)
The comic book’s concept, story and illustrations were created by GPO employees. Jim Cameron wrote the story and Creative Services’ Graphic Designer Nick Crawford provided the illustrations.
“Through the talents of Jim Cameron and Nick Crawford, GPO is able to create a publication that conveys the message that printing is an important component to the history of the world and to our nation,” says Tapella.
The $5 comic book is the perfect way to get those youngsters in your life to show you more respect (or give any of your lackluster employees a refresher). Order it at GPO’s bookstore: bookstore.gpo.gov
