After working for other companies for 27 years Howie Fenton is returning to independent consulting. Recognized in both the commercial and in-plant communities due to his articles, blogs and numerous presentations, Fenton most recently spoke at the In-plant Innovators Conference in Washington, D.C., an event organized by In-plant Graphics.
“It’s exciting returning to independent consulting,” says Fenton, who officially announced the news during the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) conference this week in Pittsburgh, where he gave a keynote yesterday titled “Creating a Road Map for Success: Strategies from Leading In-plants.”
“After over a decade of attending IPMA shows it has become of my favorite shows because there is such a great sense of camaraderie,” explains Fenton.
Fenton’s area of expertise is operational assessments, and he spends most of his time analyzing and benchmarking productivity and competitiveness. Before creating his own consulting company, his skills were honed working for the Printing Industry of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation(PIA/GATF), National Association of Printing Leadership (NAPL) and InfoTrends. He most recently served as VP of Consulting with IMG.
Fenton will continue to use his knowledge and database of benchmarks and best practices to help clients benchmark, analyze, assess and repair inefficient processes to improve financial and operational effectiveness. Working as an independent consultant will allow complete objectivity in hardware and software assessments.
“Of course, returning to independent consulting is nerve-racking too,” Fenton admits. “I am hoping that my friends and industry contacts will help through this transition. I am also hoping that there are still companies that value independent assessments and want to improve, otherwise I will be driving for Uber.”
In addition to his consulting work, Fenton has written five books including three on operational production and two on digital printing. He has been a member of the PIA’s Digital Printing Council, a member of HP’s Digital Printing Advisory Council and a judge for numerous industry print awards.
