Document Solutions at The University of Texas at Austin brought in seven new Canon digital printers, plus a wide-format device

In its time, the Xerox equipment at The University of Texas at Austin served the school well. But by late 2012, its time had come.

“There were many days when we’d have two or three Xerox techs here working on the machines,” notes Gary Cass, Copy Services manager. “People thought that they just worked here.”

That clearly could not continue. So after sending out an RFP last year, Document Solutions inked a deal with local office equipment provider Zeno Imaging that brought in seven new Canon digital printers, plus a wide-format device. In November, the 56-employee in-plant installed:

A 60˝ Canon imagePROGRAF iPF9100 wide-format inkjet printer

“We’re really pleased with them so far,” remarks Cass. “They’ve done really well.”

The quality of the output is excellent, they are faster than the previous equipment and they are much more dependable, he says. The machines have been distributed to the university’s four copy centers, but they still work together to complete large jobs.

“When we have our big projects, we’ll have three or four different printers running [the jobs],” Cass notes. “It helps a ton.”

The new 60˝ wide-format printer was added to increase capacity beyond what the in-plant’s existing 44˝ imagePROGRAF IPF 8100 printer could handle.

“Our wide-format [business], it’s just exploding,” reveals Cass. “Our sales [in Copy Services] are up 25 percent from this time last year. The wide-format had a lot to do with that.”

Along with this new digital equipment, the shop also added a Duplo DC-645 slitter/cutter/creaser to handle business cards.

“We needed a better way to cut and slit those cards—a more economical way than putting them on the cutter,” Cass says.

Overall, he reports, the in-plant has been very busy, with great sales numbers in January.

“We’re doing really, really well right now,” he says.

That goes for the rest of Document Solutions as well. Recently, the in-plant added a four-color Heidelberg GTO press and an MCS Eagle UV inkjet addressing system.
