California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Louis “Lou” Butera, of Lake Oswego, Oregon, to be the new State Printer at the Department of General Services. He will oversee the Office of State Publishing (OSP), the largest state printing operation in the country, which reported revenue of $83 million last year.
Butera succeeds Paul Dixon, who was appointed deputy director of Facilities Management in October 2023, after serving two years as State Printer. Brent Jamison, deputy director of the DGS Interagency Support Division, served as Acting State Printer in the interim.
Butera has worked in the printing industry in various roles, with stints at R.R. Donnelley and Canon Solutions America, where he was a senior account executive. His most recent position was vice president of operations at Direct Marketing Solutions, where he’s worked since 2022. His other roles include senior consultant at MAT & Associates and president of CORE Printer Direct.
Butera earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Pepperdine University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Printing Management from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.
