During In-plant Awareness Week last week, California State University, San Bernardino opened the doors of its in-plant to 31 art students and their instructor. During the tour, Manager Laura Sicklesteel showed off her in-plant's four-color Heidelberg Printmaster PM-52 and other equipment. Bookmarks designed by the students were printed on both the four-color Heidelberg and the Xerox DocuColor 252 to demonstrate the difference between offset and digital.
By inviting students into the in-plant, Sicklesteel says it provides them with valuable hands-on experience. Each student designs both a bookmark and a poster, with the bookmarks printed using a combination of digital and offset.
"We let them see the process from Preflight, RIP through the CTP equipment, plates being made, and press makeready and running the job," Sicklesteel says. "We have them look through loupes and see the differences of 175 line screened offset printing and the toner based digital output."
The posters are printed on the in-plant's Canon imagePROGRAF iPF9100 systems and then displayed for viewing in the art department.
"This gives the students another level of understanding of the various types of print," Sicklesteel explains.
