Digital Press Upgrade at Bucknell - In-plant Impressions

Bucknell University’s Office of Publications, Print and Mail has replaced its Xerox Color 800 with a new 100-page-per-minute Xerox Color 1000i digital press with a Xerox EX-P 1000i print server, powered by Fiery.

“We really liked the 800 and we liked what it was doing for us,” remarks Dean Fisher, Print Production Team Leader. So the Lewisburg, Pa., in-plant decided to stick with Xerox and move to a higher-speed device once it’s lease on the 800 ended. The new press features the optional Specialty Dry Ink Station so the shop can print gold metallic effects. So far the in-plant has only tested the gold effects, but university designers have shown an interest in using this, he says.

One recent job the in-plant did on the digital press was a run of 1,200 basketball season ticket books. The variable data job featured ticket holders’ names on the cover and bar codes on each perforated ticket to be scanned upon entry.

Fisher reports that the 1000i shows better print quality on textured stocks than the 800. He especially likes the Xerox Full Width Array color measurement device which scans the finished image and corrects errors in registration, density and color.

“The Full Width Array on this is definitely a benefit for our production staff,” Fisher says.
