The award ceremony at June’s In-plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) conference was a pretty big deal for Bloomberg Ink (BINK), Bloomberg’s in-house print and fulfillment business. Not only did the Dayton, N.J., in-plant win the coveted In-Print 2017 Best of Show award, the operation was also honored as IPMA’s 2017 Print Center of the Year. John Cruser, global manager of Bloomberg Ink Print Services, accepted the award during the Pittsburgh ceremony.
Cruser oversees three separate facilities, located in New Jersey, London and Hong Kong. Together they support 17,000 internal Bloomberg customers in 192 locations. The in-plant’s ability to connect influential decision makers to a dynamic network of information earned it the Print Center of the Year award.
In 2016, BINK’s three locations completed more than 44,000 print requests totaling 17.4 million impressions, taking an average of 1.6 days to process a print request. The facilities also boast updated technology, specifically the New Jersey location, which upgraded its equipment in December 2016 to include two HP Indigo 7900s.
Though having the latest technology is beneficial, the in-plant also emphasizes its ongoing sustainability efforts. In 2007, the New Jersey facility earned its Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification; in 2014, the London facility followed with an FSC certification of its own.
In addition to its two FSC facility certifications, 96% of all the paper used by BINK is FSC certified. The company strives to improve the sustainability of printed materials by using recycled and FSC paper, as well as environmentally preferable inks, and it encourages departments to use less paper.
All Bloomberg Ink suppliers must submit a “materials list” for BINK approval, listing non-toxic and toxic materials, recycled content composition and waste associated with manufacturing to ensure a 100% chemical-free plate-making process.
To further these green initiatives, Rainforest Alliance conducts regular on-site audits to review plant processes and separation of FSC-certified products from non-FSC-certified products within the facility. Impressively, BINK has successfully passed every audit since 2007.
