More than 100 higher-ed in-plant managers spent the week of April 7-10 having energetic conversations and enjoying great educational sessions at the Association of College and University Printers (ACUP+) conference in New Haven, Conn. The 54th annual conference ended with an awards gala during which more than a dozen in-plants were honored with ACUP Awards.
After a spirited opening reception Sunday evening, the conference kicked off Monday morning with keynote speaker Dr. Howard Fero, who used his interviews with current and former Major League Baseball players, managers and executives to come up with common leadership skills, which he shared with attendees.
“Mistakes happen. How we get past them is what determines how good of a leader we are,” he said.
Then In-plant Impressions' Editor Bob Neubauer spoke about emerging opportunities for in-plants, citing data from four different IPI research reports to show which services in-plants are moving into in their quest to add value.
In a session on production inkjet, Riso’s Andre D’Urbano asked “why print in monochrome?” as he detailed the opportunity to add inexpensive color to pieces using an inkjet press.

Then a panel of managers from Arizona State University, the University of Alaska and the University of Brighton talked about the growth of wide-format in their operations.
Other sessions have focused on production digital color equipment, how to manage a business, copier fleet management, Web-to-print, production inkjet and more. There was also a packed vendor exhibit area where attendees learned more about the latest technologies.
