Though it's a leader in the color printing business, Canon U.S.A. is not ignoring monochrome, as IPG and other industry journalists learned this week at the One Canon Press & Analyst Event in Boca Raton, Fla. The company showed off the third generation of its varioPRINT DP product line: the varioPRINT 140 Series, which it says delivers offset-like print quality with sharp lines, halftone uniformity and smooth gradations at speeds of 140 ipm, 130 ipm and 115 ipm.
"Monochrome printed pages are projected to remain the largest by volume in the coming years, and there is still a strong desire for devices dedicated to black-and-white printing,” said Toyotsugu Kuwamura, executive VP and GM of Canon's Business Imaging Solutions Group.
Positioned for small to mid-sized printers with average monthly print volumes up to 800,000 letter-size images, the varioPRINT 140 Series also boasts enhancements to copy and scan capabilities to address the document digitization needs in markets such as legal, healthcare and education.
One reason for such high-quality output is because of the use of ScreenPoint Technology, which allows the reproduction of color halftones and photographs as grayscale images with excellent resolution, dense black fills, and precise fine lines without operator intervention.
The varioPRINT 140 Series is equipped with new security features to help provide better control over unauthorized usage and enhanced observation of user activity. Security features include user authentication by role or via LDAP-based operator login, a configurable user interface and extended audit logging.
The varioPRINT 140 also produces no ozone emissions with virtually no toner waste. What's more, its energy consumption is among the lowest per print when compared to other devices in the marketplace, according to Canon.
Also announced this week were several new color and monochrome multifunction and single function printers. They include the new imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3530i and imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3525i models (with improved scanning capabilities); the new imageRUNNER ADVANCE C355iF/C255iF models (the first A4 models to be introduced in the platform), the imageCLASS LBP312dn (45 ppm black-and-white) printer, the Color imageCLASS MF735Cdw (28 ppm multifunction) printer and the Color imageCLASS LBP654Cdw (28 ppm color).
